that’s exactly what I was thinking! a fusion is the physical manifestation of their love, and since Greg was 100% human and Rose was 100% gem, the only way they could fuse is by creating Steven! (That’s also why Rose said she’s only half of Steven on the video tape she left him, and also why Lion is probably her other half fused with a cat, hence the cat carrier in Greg’s garage.)
